Saturday we took a step back from the chaos of Cancer and focused all of our attention on the original Sherman Warrior, Evan. Evan was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease 5 years ago at the age of 7. We had no idea what was going on, but during a pediatrician check-up, for what we thought was maybe constipation, turned into an emergency trip for a blood transfusion and 5 days stay at the hospital with multiple tests and needle pokes. Ultimately he was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. Since then, I’ve been actively involved in the local Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation chapter, sitting on their Leadership board for their annual Take Steps walk. Collectively we raise funds for research and local support for those suffering with Crohn’s or Colitis. There is NO CURE for Crohn’s or Colitis, yet over 3.1 million American’s suffer from this unpredictable, yucky disease.
The weather on Saturday made everything ‘iffy’. Luckily, 5 minutes to show-time, the rain stopped and we were able to walk. We walked around the concourse of Impact Field, which was really nice! I’d like to go back there for a game. Three laps around, to stand for the 3.1 million American’s suffering from Crohn’s or Colitis. They even had the concessions open. So don’t mind me, as I grabbed Brian and I couple Shandy’s for our victory lap. We are so proud of how Evan handles this disease. He’s been on multiple different medications, because there isn’t a ‘one size fits all’. He can go to bed one night fine and wake up the next morning in pain. It’s hard enough to be a tweenage boy in middle school, then to add on an unpredictable disease. It’s just not fair. I’d take cancer AND his Crohn’s if it meant he could live a carefree life. He is our original warrior and has had to grow up faster than any average kid to have to deal with this disease. So happy we were able to stop and honor him for the day. He deserves it.
